Hi Lisa,
Thanks for writing. God bless you for what you are trying to do. Especially since your note shows your care and passion and frustration. Unfortunately, my specialty is helping employers succeed with their Hispanic (primarily Mexican immigrants) employees. I will, however, give you my opinion. First, whatever happens to these young teens is not your fault. I expect with your experience you already know that. And also understand if you don't see any effect you might have on the students, that doesn't mean down the road something you said, or taught, or acted out, won't influence them positively. Sounds like you've been able to find what they like. At least you see their dreams? The tough part, as I see it, is the baggage and outside influences these kids bring to the table. So dreams might be some overwhelming impossibility. And yes, a white teacher doesn't help you, unless they know you've been through the same experiences. Otherwise, in their mind, how could you relate to them? Do you live in their neighborhood? Do you eat what they eat? Have you seen the movie Stand Up and Deliver? The story of a Los Angeles Mexican-American math teacher in a mostly Mexican-American school district? Maybe you've seen it a hundred times. If not, there's some optimism to gain. Pay attention and use the Spanish words he uses.
Do you speak Spanish? What are you doing to relate to what these kids have in their culture? Also, depending on what generation these kids are from, the challenges will be different. For example, I'm first generation U.S. born. Bilingual. The farther down the line, 2nd, 3rd generation and so on, cultural idiosyncrasies get watered down. (That also means what I teach becomes less effective.) Where does faith come in? Are they Catholic? What about your faith? Do you pray for these children? Do you pray for wisdom and discernment so you can affect the children's lives. I know this is heavy stuff, and perhaps your school places strict limits on what you can do. Now, the best thing I see is you only have 4 students. Do you know what their parents do? Have you met with their parents? But I can't tell if your classroom is just a temporary stop or an entire school year program. Because if merely temporary, then they are back to the same ol' same ol' stuff. Are they looking for a life-of-crime? Or just a general rejection of authority? Sorry to sound like such a buzz-kill. I'd like to hear more. And I'd like to know how you can do this day-in, day-out. By the way, if you prefer not to write back, that's O.K. too. These are tough challenges. I have a 17 year old high school senior and a 5th grader. And our challenges are zero compare to what these kids might be facing. Warmest Regards, Emeric

wow.... its like seeing the light over and over again. this stuff is so counter intuitive but if you're currently dealing with it, it actually all make sense. I always blamed the individual and I have made 4 very good workers turn sour AND quit within the last 5 months. Im sure thats just the beginning of my flaws (: Thanks again.

Hi Libby,
Yes, I agree with your prediction.

You bring up a potential BOMBSHELL .

The money is like a Las Vegas casino promotion where
the casino says "Stay here on us, and get $500 gambling credit".

Not every guest stays when the credit runs out.

My B.S. meter tells me this is much more insidious
than the public will ever know.

Perhaps a way for our current administration
to "kick-back" support to the labor unions
and Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

And another way to say "see what we've done for the immigrants' plight".
But piling another tax onto the sore shoulders of American business.

What kind of stimulus is that?

Thanks for commenting!
